PECAA is pleased to announce its next ABO virtual education event: Overcoming Obstacles In Optical. Taking place on Sunday, June 7th, 11:00 am – 5:30 pm ET this event offers six (6) hours of ABO-approved continuing education to opticians and optical staff across the country and will be presented in a synchronous, virtual webinar format.
Each PECAA education event provides impactful instruction on a targeted area relevant to contemporary eye care practice. This event will explore obstacles in optical — where expectations, performance and trust intersect. Topics will include differentiating your optical from online retailers, preventing complex eyewear issues, combining clinical knowledge with ethical sales communication and leveraging VR measured gaze behavior to solve inconsistent lens performance.

11:10 am – 12:00 pm — Opticians vs. The Internet
Speaker: Kevin Walker, ABOC, NCLEC, LDO, COEE ABO CE Hours: 1 — Course Level: ABO Pending Description: The emergence and growth of online eyewear purchasing have posed significant challenges for traditional brick-and-mortar optical shops. This course will explore the launch and history of online glasses shopping, as well as strategies for competing effectively. By providing in-person services that cannot be offered online, optical shops can differentiate themselves from online retailers. Implementing various pre-sale, post-sale and enhanced services will help these businesses become the preferred choice for patients seeking eyewear solutions.
12:00 – 12:10 pm — Q&A
12:15 – 1:55 pm — When The Glasses Don’t Work: Advanced Troubleshooting For The Practicing Optician
Speaker: George Bourque ABOM, NCLEC, LDO ABO CE Hours: 2 — Course Level: ABO Pending Description: In this course, attendees will develop a systematic approach to troubleshooting patient eyewear when spectacles do not perform as expected at dispense. Participants will build and apply a structured, repeatable process designed to identify the root cause of complex visual complaints. Through guided, real-world case studies, attendees will analyze patient symptoms and apply advanced troubleshooting techniques to evaluate prescription accuracy, measurements, frame fit and lens design. Participants will then revisit each case to assess what could have been done differently at the initial encounter, strengthening their ability to prevent issues before they occur. Quantitative methods, including optical formulas and calculations, will be incorporated to verify findings, evaluate induced prism and optical performance and support clinical decision-making. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, problem-solving and applying advanced optical knowledge to improve patient outcomes and reduce remakes.
1:55 – 2:05 pm — Q&A
2:05 – 2:25 pm — Break
2:25 – 4:05 pm — Sell Is Not A Four Letter Word
Speaker: Joy L. Gibb, ABOC, FNAO ABO CE Hours: 2 — Course Level: ABO Pending Description: Opticians are a mix of medical knowledge, technical information and retail salesmanship, but we tend to be most uncomfortable with being sales people. Being able to blend the medical and technical aspects of eye care with the ability to sell means increased revenue and job security without compromising customer satisfaction. This course will help eye care professionals become more confident in their selling skills by developing better communication and sales skills with customers.
4:05 – 4:15 pm — Q&A
4:20 – 5:10 pm — Reframing Lens Customization With Gaze Intelligence
Speaker: Kelly Rosemann, ABOC ABO CE Hours: 1 — Course Level: ABO Technical Level II Description: This course introduces Eye Care Professionals (ECPs) to Gaze Dynamics, a behavioral lens creation approach that leverages how patients explore their visual environment. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on static parameters or individual customization, Gaze Dynamics identifies real zones of visual priority across tasks and environments. By integrating Virtual Reality behavioral measurements, lenses are created by knowing the areas of the lens that patients use, improving comfort, adaptation and perceived performance. Participants will also learn how VR can differentiate a practice, allowing ECPs to clearly explain lens value and enhance the premium purchase experience.
5:10 – 5:20 pm — Q&A
5:20 – 5:30 pm — Conclusion And Adjournment
